Free. About 3 minutes. No account needed.

Consulting is the easiest business to start and one of the hardest to grow, because the thing you are selling is invisible until someone buys it. Your job in the first ninety days is to make your expertise legible.

What matters most when you start a consultancy

  • Positioning beats credentials. “I help small manufacturers cut warehouse waste” wins more work than a list of qualifications.
  • Case studies are your product page. Situation, action, outcome. Two good ones will out-sell any amount of website copy.
  • Your day rate is a signal. Pricing too low reads as inexperience, and raising it later is far harder than starting there.
  • Retainers are the goal. Project work pays the bills; retainers turn a freelancer into a business with predictable income.
  • LinkedIn is the channel. For most UK consultants it out-performs everything else combined — but only if you write from real experience.
